Tobe Nwigwe, a Nigerian-American college athlete turned rapper, has generated a large social media following with viral hits, video content, freestyles and protest songs.
Since August 2016, Nwigwe has posted an original song and video every Sunday as part of his #gettwistedsundays series, described by MTV as ‘art that serves both as an homage to Blackness and a spiritual awakening’. Releasing a handful of tracks in 2020, including a 44 second single calling for justice for Breonna Taylor and Elijah McLain, who both died following encounters with the police in the United States, he now counts Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys and Michael B Jordan among fans, and his appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series has received more than one millions views.
